One Book...

Ed Stetzer managed to overcome my quick evasive cyber-fakes and tag me! Awwww mannn... ;-)

Here goes...

1. One book that changed your life: The Autobiography of Malcolm X, and Great Doctrines of the Bible (3 vols), Martin Lloyd-Jones
2. One book that you’ve read more than once: Knowing God, J.I. Packer
3. One book I’d want on a desert island: since I'm alone on a deserted island, and probably puzzling about things, I think I'd want either The Mystery of Providence by John Flavel or The Sovereignty of God, Pink
4. One book that made me laugh: a witty and insightful memoir, Girl Meets God, Lauren Winner or most anything by Zora Neale Hurston (for example, Of Mules and Men or Dust Tracks on the Road).
5. One book that made me cry: All of James Cone's books (God of the Oppressed, A Black Theology of Liberation, Black Theology and Black Power, etc.)
6. One book that you wish you had written: The Christian Ministry, Charles Bridges
7. One book you wish had never been written: Shelby Spong's Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism, and all of his others come to think of it...
8. One book that you are currently reading: Systematic Theology, Berkhoff
9. One book that you’ve been meaning to read: The Institutes, John Calvin

This is harder than it looks! (note that every question starts "one book" and I've routinely given two or more... sorry).

Now... I tag: Jeff Cavanaugh; Anthony Carter; and Andrea Ruffner!

Looks like you just did the same thing as me, and we have the same "book we are meaning to read."

Glad to know I'm not the only one who has not gotten around to the Institutes yet ;-)

I find there are always a lot of short term needs on my reading schedule. I'm teaching a course in the Fall, have a sermon to prepare for the end of the month, a Sunday School class to start preparing for (I usually develop my own curriculum), some articles to write, etc. To take the time to work through the Institutes always seems so daunting. I suspect in about a year (when the youngest child is a little older) I'll be able to spend more time reading and less time simply making sure she isn't getting into anything.

Did you preach today? What did you preach on? I was helping in the church nursery this morning, but this evening we had some excellent ministry on the superlatives in Ephesians 3:8-21 from a visiting preacher.

That was my first-ever tag! :-) It was fun, especially since the topic was books! I was thrilled to see that you like Girl Meets God. I couldn't put that book down.

Hey, that copy of The Institutes wasn't meant to sit on your shelf! Just giving you a hard time. ;-)

Know that you, Kristie, and FBCGC were prayed for in our service on Sunday night - and I'm sure in many of our homes on other nights. May God continue to bless.

John! Good to hear from you bro. How is the Mrs? Hey, be assured the Institutes will not just collect dust on the shelves. I've got a plan I'm going to try that will hopefully help me through the Institutes and a couple of systematics I've been wanting to look into.

My deepest thanks to the saints for their prayers. I'm greatly encouraged to know you all have continued to love us in prayer, as we have you all. Say "hello" to everyone back there, and don't be surprised if in the not-too-distant future you get a call with questions about starting a bookstall!

Grace and peace,
Thabiti
